RMS is a mail store and retrieval system which is designed for use in a nomadic setting. It permits unlimited replication in the presence of disconnected reorganization (refiling, deletion, and grouping of messages). It can hand out per-message access capabilities that allow sharing of messages with untrusted external readers. RMS may also be used to implement message archives by creating archival replicas.

RMS does not impose a hierarchical structure on its contents.
